Easy Garlic Scapes
While at Whole Foods the other day I stumbled upon this bright onion looking thing called garlic scapes. Since my husband and I love trying new things, I added it to my cart. I started researching and found out that these are the flower stems that grow from the tops of a garlic.
When you remove these stems it encourages the growth of a garlic bulb, however they are so enjoyable to eat. The taste reminds me of a scallion with a hint of mild garlic flavor. They are very hearty and can last for several weeks in the refrigerator. Eat them Raw or Cooked- Its your choice.
They also have some amazing health benefits. They help detoxify the body to flush out the liver and kidneys and act as a diuretic to remove toxins and eliminate waste, improve circulation vision and bone health, good source of vitamin c and calcium , may have anti cancer properties, reduce inflammation and aid in immune support.
Here are a few ways you can enjoy them:
- Grill them
- Make pesto
- Make garlic scape butter
- Add to stir Fry
- Saute them and add them to pasta
- Add them to mashed potatoes
Anywhere that you enjoy garlic or onion you can use scapes as a milder alternative.
